Global migration – is it for the better or the worse?
Dr. Matlotleng Matlou, the CEO for the Africa Institute of South Africa, will take a look at “Global Migration: A Journey through African Eyes” at Kansas City Kansas Community College Tuesday, May 4, from 9:30-11 a.m. in Room 2325.
“This is a rare opportunity,” said Barbara Clark-Evans, Director of the KCKCC Intercultural Center. “Dr. Matlou is in the U.S. for a short period and has agreed to come to Kansas between other pertinent businesses.”
Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Dr. Matlou and his family left that country during the struggle against apartheid and spent his childhood days in Botswana, Tanzania, West Africa and Nigeria before earning a degree in Political Science and Geography in Ghana in 1979. He received a Masters in International Relations in England in 1980 and then was a lecturer at the University of Liberia from 1981-86 before returning to England to complete his Ph.D., specializing on Botswana’s refugee policy.
Since earning his doctorate, Dr. Matlou has worked for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees and been the Chief Director of the Migration at the Department of Home Affairs and the Deputy Director-General for Tourism in the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism before assuming his present position as CEO of the Africa Institute of South Africa in 2007. In addition, Dr. Matlou serves as a council member for both International Air Services at the Department of Transport and South African Democracy Education.
Open to the public without charge, Dr. Matlou’s presentation is co-sponsored by the KCKCC Intercultural Center, E-Journal and the newly founded Ralph Bunche Society.
