College Advancement
Two Kansas City Kansas Community College freshmen have earned All-Jayhawk Conference softball honors for 2010.
Jenyce Spence, a shortstop from Baxter Springs, was named to the second team while outfielder Rose Breitenstein of Bishop Ward earned honorable mention.
The Lady Blue Devil offensive leader with a .408 batting average, Spence had 51 hits, 13 doubles, 5 home runs and 17 runs-batted-in for a slugging percentage of .632. She was equally effective defensively, committing only six errors in 43 games while recording 102 putouts and 85 assists for a .964 fielding percentage.
“During the season, she was ranked at one time or another in the Top 50 in the country in offense and home runs plus she also pitched several games for us,” said KCKCC Coach Kacy Tillery.
Breitenstein also played in all 43 games, hitting .369 with 34 hits, 10 RBI and 15 stolen bases. Often hitting from the leadoff position, she also drew 10 walks and was hit by pitches 11 times.
“Defensively, her great speed enabled her to cover a lot of ground and throw out nine runners trying to advance including seven at home plate,” said Tillery. Breitenstein had just one error and it didn’t come until the final game of the regular season.
“Both are not only quality athletes but very humble,” said Tillery. “They play extremely hard every second they’re on the field.”
