Two gripping dramas await theatre-goers at the annual Original Student One-Act Play Festival at Kansas City Kansas Community College Thursday through Sunday, April 29-May 1.
Totally written, directed and produced by KCKCC students, performances are at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday in the Performing Arts Center on the KCKCC campus at 7250 State Avenue. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens and are available at the door.
“,” the story of a 20- something, full-time barista, is written by Brandon Durkes, a major in English-Creative Writing and graduate of Topeka High School. Played by LeVance Rucker, Derek is quick-witted with a general malaise towards everything and a flop at trying to kill himself.
Complicating matters are his older brother, Scott, played by Nick Welker; his roommate, Phil, portrayed by Brett Baker; and Megan, a role played by Janelle Bartoszek, who happens upon the fine coffee shop in which Derek makes his living. Brandy Hoover completes the cast in the role of a hippy lady. Dan Barbuto directs the play with Kelly Vogel in charge of scenic design and Jonathan Humphrey lighting design.
Written by sophomore Tim McCormick, “Masters at Killing” tells of two brothers who are separated at birth to be raised under the auspices of rival corporations and grow to be trained assassins. Eventually, brother is pitted against brother and they vow to raise as much chaos as possible or die trying.
Cast members are Jared McElroy, Nick Welker, Jonathan Humphrey, Ashley Gerni, Vanessa Hall, Katherene Garry and author Tim McCormick as Officer Jones. Brandon Durkes directs the performance with Kelly Vogel providing scenic design and Dan Barbuto lighting design.
